What Napa's All About: Bed and Breakfasts and Wine Tastings

Gift giving, twinkling lights, and plenty of booze often make for a festive holiday season, but going overboard with the latter wouldn't garner a stamp of approval from Kris Kringle. Leave it to Napa's wine producers and humble Bed and Breakfast proprietors to class up those awkward, alcohol-tinged family gatherings and raise some money for charity in the process.

Plenty of Napa Valley wineries are having holiday Open House events on weekends, but to experience a smorgasbord of varietals, vintner offerings, and enjoy the quaint charm of Downtown Napa, buy a ticket to the annual B&B Tour & Taste Event. The four-hour affair will take place on December 5th from 2:00-6:00 PM, when ticket-holders will go from one B&B to the next to "ooh" and "aah" over wreaths, ornaments, and tinsel decor.

A $55 ticket gets you on-board complimentary buses and shuttles (safety first, as always, when you're tasting like crazy), or you can inquire directly to upgrade to a limo. You'll rub shoulders with B&B owners, who are there to impart that down-home holiday cheer, and taste specially-paired food and/or wine at every tour stop. Select downtown merchants will offer discounts to ticket holders as well.

Charity recipients have yet-to-be identified, but trust that your cash will go toward a worthy cause during the season of giving. In past years the tour has sold out in advance, so purchase early. It's tough to say no to the warmth of a mom and pop establishment, don'tcha know. Or maybe that's the Cabernet Sauvignon talking.

We're almost to winter, and that means less people want to go out to eat - so get some good fall recipes. The best fall recipes are for things like soups, stews, and roasts that are hearty and healthy - so you want to pack in the heavy veggies like corn, squash, potatoes, and so forth. You can actually skip needing credit counseling - if you dine out less, and cook more, you spend less money, have more for Christmas gifts, and if you make enough to have leftover, there's lunches taken care of right there. Believe it or not, the right fall recipes could actually have you eating well and saving money at the same time.
