Rock The Boat in London This Year, 'Pirate Radio'-Style

Today, "Pirate Radio", or "The Boat That Rocked" as it is known in the U.K., opens nationwide. The movie is based on the true story of a few rogue rock-and-roll deejays who broadcast from ships anchored just outside U.K. during a 1966 ban of rock music by the BBC. That same spirit is still alive in the U.K. today and here's how you can capture it.

Where to Stay:
Keeping with the anti-establishment theme of the film, The Pavilion Hotel in London certainly doesn't play by the rules. Every room in the hotel has an over-the-top theme and is decorated in loud colors and mismatched patterns. The bathrooms are small, the building is old, there is no elevator, this is not the Ritz, but what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in character. The price is right too, rates start around £60 a night.

Where to Eat:
The Gambardella Cafe in Blackheath, London is not only featured in Pirate Radio but its also a favorite of locals. Known mostly for their breakfast-like their Fry Up, which is a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, baked beans and tomato- The Gambardella is also praised for their low prices and friendly service. They are open for breakfast and lunch daily.

What to Do:
Most of the filming for "Pirate Radio" took place on the former Dutch hospital ship Timor Challenger which is docked in Portland Harbour, Dorset. Portland Harbour is one of the largest ports for cruise ship calls in the U.K. There are also several tour companies that do short excursions from Dorset, like Blue Line Cruise which has a one hour Dorset cruise through Poole Harbour and along the coast out into Poole Bay. They offer discounted rates for families, tours leave daily, rate and schedule information can be found on their website.
