Follow In The Footsteps Of Great Artists At These Three Inspiring Sites

November 12, 2009 at 6:04 PM | by egw | 0 Comments

Sometimes you just have to get away to nurture your artist's soul and allow yourself to refill that well of inspiration from which you draw daily. Follow in the footsteps of these famous artists by visiting the places they loved and were stirred by in life.

· The Roman Ruins in Arles, France -- Vincent van Gogh was Dutch by birth but completed some of his best work in this southern city, where his paintings gained the brilliant color he was famous for. The amphitheater in Arles is far more accessible than the Colosseum for budding painters.

· Vasishtha Gufa in Rishikesh, India -- The Beatles' stay in India launched a million jokes (like in 2007's "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story") but they wrote most of the songs on their genre-defying White Album at an ashram here. Look for your own new song by taking a guide and spelunking in what Hindus revere as the home of a guru.

· Liebfrauen Church in Zürich, Switzerland -- His best known novel takes place on the streets of Dublin, but Joyce spent most of his life abroad, including several productive years working on Ulysses in this city as World War I raged around him. Look back longingly on your hometown from the sanctuary where Joyce would attend church services.
