Virgin America Launches Refundable Main Cabin Tickets With 'Hangover Clause'

October 9, 2009 at 2:51 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

Virgin America, the California-based airline that paid too much for their ubiquitously-plastered slogan "on a mission to make flying good again," is launching a new class of fully-refundable, fully-transferable flight options. The "Main Cabin Refundable" fares will obviously cost a little bit more but, in addition to allowing you a wide range of ticket changes, they come with perks like checking in a bag for free (no small perk these days). This is basically a travel insurance-plus fare.

Main Cabin Refundable tickets are fully refundable up to the literal minute of departure. Ditto for transferring the tickets to a different name. There are no blackout dates, no minimum or maximum stay requirements, and no advanced purchases required. They really seem to be going out of their way to make these fares usable and attractive, even refunding the differences between old and new tickets to your credit card.

Small companies, big families, and perhaps even schools will appreciate the ability to transfer tickets, though we're more grateful for what we've affectionately tagged the "hangover clause." This is the part where they convert uncanceled "no shows" into credit for future flights. That's the kind of thing that might've saved us literally thousands of dollars over the years. Not any more however, because we're responsible now. But during certain periods of our lives—thousands.

Only one-way tickets are eligible for Main Cabin Refundable, which kind of sucksThe fares are available round trip according to VA. The press releases they're passing around seem to imply you can only get the deal by dialing into 1.877.FLY.VIRGIN (1.877.359.8474), which means that you'll also have to pay the $15 surcharge that goes with reservation call center bookings. Expect that last part to change sooner rather than later.

Update:

To thank its business guests, as of today Virgin America’s web site now features new business-friendly flexible fare options, including Fully Refundable Main Cabin and Fully Refundable Main Cabin Select fares, as well as a new “Instant Upgrade to Main Cabin Select” fare class.* Previously, Fully Refundable Fares were only available via the airline’s call center and travel agents. The new choices give business and leisure travelers more flexible fare options, as well as access to premium seats at lower fares when their travel plans are not likely to change.

Ok so either we pulled an old release earlier (sorry if so) or this changed faster than we thought possible. Either way, good outcome.
