Where Will The Next Generation Of National Lampoon's 'Vacation' Go?

October 8, 2009 at 2:25 PM | by JetSetCD | 2 Comments

When we talk about the best road trip movie ever, nothing even comes close to the 1983 classic "National Lampoon's Vacation." You remember it: Clark Griswald drives his family from Chicago to California to have a family fun time at Walley World, but a million little hilarious obstacles occur along the route. The movie spawned sequels, like European Vacation, Vegas Vacation, Christmas Vacation, and even another sequel to Christmas Vacation. But apparently the world hasn't had enough of the Griswalds, and 26 years after the original, yet another sequel is in the works.

This time however, Clark (played by Chevy Chase) is staying home while his grown-up son Rusty, with kids of his own, strikes out on the American family road trip. David Dobkin, the director of "Wedding Crashers" is expected to at least produce, if not direct, the new movie. Right now, the ultimate destination of the road trip hasn't been named, but we have a few ideas of where the Griswalds might be heading this year century...

Where do people road trip to these days? We're tempted to say Niagara Falls, but boy would that be boring. Judging from the fact that the "Wedding Crashers" director is involved, we are however able to guess at two possible destinations:

· New York City
Assuming the Griswalds still live in Chicago, going to NYC is a doable road trip. People still drive into New York, movies about it are always relatively popular, and there is tons of traffic on your way into the city, making for drama. On the other hand, what is there between Chicago and New York to make trouble—and therefore the bulk of the movie—for the Griswalds? Maybe the family creates havoc at the Shipshewana auctions, but then what? Cleveland? The Amish can't do it all.

· Cancun
Cancun would totally work except for the fact that you don't really road trip to Cancun. But if they did, it has the potential for hilarity as they drive from Chicago down through Arkansas and Texas, and finally into Mexico. The opportunity for displaying stereotypes here is huge, as is the temptation to focus much of the movie on the debauchery of Cancun.

Where do you think the next generation of the Griswalds will drive? Let us know in the comments!

    Ultimate Classic Movies

Ok, I imagine the Griswalds will take a road trip following the Mississippi River south to New Orleans then board a cruise ship to several ports of call in the Caribbean. And you all know those 'first time cruisers' can be a hoot.

Even MORE Griswolds, courtesy of HomeAway

We're excited about the new movie, but at HomeAway, the leading vacation rental marketplace, we're also helping bring the Griswolds back in our new ad campaign launching on Feb 7. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo will once again play Clark and Ellen Griswold in the new ad that will promote the benefits of vacation rentals. Check it out: http://budurl.com/griswolds
