As part of their volunteer work, families help set up holiday festivities at a retirement home in the small community of Bambu where most residents have been abandoned by their families. Volunteers play games with residents, decorate the home and provide a special lunch for them. Participants on the tour also help set up holiday parties (aww) and "summer camps" for local children in Puerto Viejo. Last year, the group coached soccer, prepared educational activities and made lunch for the kids. During downtime on the trip, guides take volunteers on fun adventures like waterfall excursions, zip lining and rafting.
This all-inclusive package costs $1,595 per person for adults, children under 12 are $985, rates are based on double occupancy. The trip runs from December 19-27 and must be booked by November 30, 2009 to guarantee the current rate. You can book online at Tropicaladventures.com or by calling 1-800-832-9419.
