3. Take your car in for a tune-up beforehand
This one seems like a no-brainer, but you'll be driving in the desert, so it's better error on the side of being too prepared. You don't want to blow out a tire in the middle of the Mojave and realize you don't have a spare. Which reminds us, make sure to actually have a spare and extra supplies, like coolant or even a fold-out reflective triangle sign to caution traffic in case you break down or have car trouble at night.
2. Pack water and stay hydrated.
Again, you're in the desert, where scorching summertime temperatures reach higher than 115 degrees. With the arid climate and frequent coffee stops to stay caffeinated while driving, you'll really need to make sure you're keeping hydrated. Just because you're in a car with the air conditioning on doesn't mean you're completely safe from outside elements. This is also a perfect way to prime for the overindulging you'll be doing in Vegas.
1. Make like a Boy or Girl Scout and be prepared
Map out the route ahead of time or program your GPS to ensure you know where you're going. When it comes time to hit the road, try to avoid rush-hour travel, which can add another couple of hours onto your road trip. To pass the time in the car, you'll get sick of hearing the same old CDs or radio stations on repeat. Instead, get an unabridged book on CD or download an audiobook onto your iPod from sites like audible.com. Go with a Vegas theme with picks like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or 21: Bringing Down the House. Once you arrive at Sin City, you'll be pumped to hit the casinos, after making us of the awesome free self-park garages, of course.
