It's Halloween, Do You Have Your Silver Shamrock Mask Yet?

Happy Halloween 2009, everybody! I've always loved Halloween, because it's one of those all-fun, no baggage holidays where you're pretty much required to party and be ridiculous. As the Geto Boys point out, this year Halloween falls on a weekend, ramping up the crazy factor in cities around the world. I'm fortunate to live in New York, home of the legendary Village Halloween Parade, and even luckier to have a friend who lives along the parade route, so we'll be watching from above the fray. It's fun to stand along the sidewalk too, but be prepared for a crush of bodies akin to Times Square on New Years Eve.

I'm looking forward to seeing the costume choices tonight. Michael Jackson will probably be well represented this year due to his recent passing, but last year was a big MJ year at the parade as well, since it was the 25th anniversary of Thriller. I recall seeing a beautifully choreographed rendition of the zombie dance on Sixth Avenue with about 50 or so dancers, and wonder if they'll try to top it this year. There probably will be the usual range of political figures and celebrities as well, but I'm mostly curious to see how many marchers will dress up like Balloon Boy. My guess: 23.

The New York parade starts at 7:00 p.m. and goes up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 21st Street. Other major parades around the country include the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval and Chicago's North Halsted Halloween Parade. Wherever you end up, enjoy your pagan holiday. I'll post coverage of the Village Halloween Parade tomorrow.
