Like the real Amelia Earhart, Hilary Swank traveled around the world while shooting the film Amelia, in theaters today. They even spent a few very notable days in picturesque Halifax, Nova Scotia where they recreated Earhart's departure on the plane "Friendship," which landed in Wales less than a day later, making Amelia the first woman to cross the Atlantic by plane.

In honor of Amelia, here are a few tips to having a high-flying getaway of your own in Nova Scotia:

You don't need a pilot's license, to see the sights of Halifax from above. Air Vision Services provides custom helicopter tours of Halifax and Nova Scotia year round. Tours can be 30 minutes, 60 minutes or as long as you would like to charter the aircraft. They will take you over the city or along the coastline, you get to call the shots and choose what you want to see. You can email Air Vision at info@visionairhelicopters.ca for rates and availability.

During the Nova Scotia shoot, the cast of Amelia enjoyed an extended lunch break at MacAskill's Restaurant on the Halifax Harbor. MacAskill's serves reasonably priced seafood and pasta dishes including their specialties like fresh Nova Scotia Lobster and Chicken Wellington "Atlantic," a chicken breast stuffed with lobster and wrapped in puff pastry, served with a lemon pepper sauce for $22. McAskill's is open for lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday. You can call 902-466-3100 for reservations.

The Westin Nova Scotian was recently renovated and has been named the favorite hotel in Halifax by the readers of The Coast for the past two years. The Westin has also gone out of their way to provide just about any amenity you could need, including running routes and kids running strollers for guests. Rates start at $229.

If you can't make it to NS, you can still get a taste of Amelia and aviation history at the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, 223 North Terrace Street, Atchison, Kansas. Beginning today, the museum will feature a special exhibit of props from the movie. They will also be showing the film all weekend, tickets cost $10.
