Internet to Atlanta TSA Agents: Sorry About That!

October 17, 2009 at 4:15 PM | by Victor Ozols | 0 Comments

Gosh it's hard to be objective, and no fun at all. On Friday, a travel blogger named Nicole White posted a harrowing account of being detained in Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport by TSA Agents. Entitled TSA Agents Took My Son, her post alleges, among other things, that a male TSA agent separated her from her 16-month-old son for a private pat-down, which is against TSA procedures. Christopher Elliott picked up the story on Elliott.org, and despite his sage counsel that we withhold judgment until all the facts come out, the commenting classes rose to the defense of White.

After all, if her story was true - that agents had been rude to her, deliberately prolonged her secondary screening, and whisked her baby from her arms and out of sight - then the TSA really is a rogue agency. What kind of monsters would do such a thing?

Problem is, her story doesn't quite add up. In response to the allegations, the TSA released the surveillance video of the incident, and it looks like her son was never taken from her. He was briefly patted down while sitting on her lap, and the whole incident was over in less than 12 minutes. (Caveat: This is all assuming that this video is authentic and hasn't been doctored or something fiendish like that. And that the agents weren't verbally abusive to her, as there is no audio.)

So, Atlanta TSA, on behalf of the internet, I'm sorry we jumped to conclusions yesterday. I'm as guilty as anyone, because even I couldn't resist adding my two cents to the comments on Chris's blog, writing that "Unless Nic is making things up, those Atlanta TSA agents screwed the pooch on this one." You see that donkey-headed man in the photo? That's me.

Thing is, I knew that the TSA would have a response, and that Nic seemed a little kooky, and that it probably didn't go down exactly as she described it. But after reading about her alleged mistreatment, I couldn't help but feel mad at the TSA. It just seemed like such a travesty.

People must really mistrust the TSA to be inclined to believe a story that, in hindsight, had more holes than Swiss cheese. But fair's fair. You need to hear both sides.

Of course, the internet doesn't like to deliberate long on issues, so I doubt anything will change when the next story like this comes up. Still, kudos to Chris for withholding judgment until the TSA could respond.

Alright, Atlanta TSA. I'm sorry about that. We were too quick to reach for the pitchforks. So, we cool?
