All Of The Nation's A Stage For A Free Night Of Theater On Oct. 15

Gleeks and other theater nerds will be thrilled to know that they can catch complimentary shows in more than 120 cities across the country on October 15, the designated Free Night of Theater. But theater newbies benefit, too. They get a chance to dip their feet in the theater pool instead of having to dive right in and become full-fledged patrons of the arts.

The fifth annual Free Night aims to expose theater to the masses, especially those demographics that are typically underrepresented in theater audiences. It's the perfect time to try out a new company that you've been meaning to see or one that you've never even heard of. Offerings include everything from experimental companies to musical-theater troupes, and ballet companies to classical music concerts.

Although October 15 is the free day, companies are offering gratis shows on various days. A lot of tickets already have been reserved, but there are a number of shows that are still open. In New York, you can watch All Through the Night from the Red Fern Theatre Company, a troupe that focuses on socially-conscious works. The show, which won a Jefferson Award Nomination for "Best New Play" when it debuted in Chicago, follows four German women during the Third Reich and its aftermath. Or go to the O.C., where the Irvine Barclay Theatre is featuring Montreal's Théàtre Sans Fil's adaptation of The Hobbit with giant puppets. If you spot a sold-out show you really want to see, check if you can sign up for standby tickets.

To reserve your ticket, just visit the Free Night website, click "Find a Show" in the left column and choose your region. Then click "Details" and reserve your spot. Some regions make you go through their local website, rather than the national site, and others have their own set of guidelines; like Amarillo, Texas won't release its tickets until October 15 at noon. Either way, you'll find the instructions on Free Night's site.
