Make Time For A 'Couples Retreat' In Bora Bora

Critics and fans who caught the movie "Couples Retreat" over the weekend may not have been that impressed with the movie's jokes, but at least the setting made up for it. The premise of this comedy, starring Vince Vaughn, Kristin Davis, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, is that four couples travel to the "Eden Resort" for a vacation and find out that the resort's couples therapy sessions aren't optional.

The Eden Resort in the movie is actually the very upscale St. Regis Bora Bora in real life. The production took over the entire resort last fall for the shoot, meaning the cast and crew had to live there for nearly 8 weeks; tough gig, huh?

Vince Vaughn stayed in one of the resort's posh "Royal Over-water Pool Villas.” Vaughn's 3,455-square-foot unit featured two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, two walk-in closets, a living room, a private terrace with two gazebos, two outdoor showers, and it's own private pool suspended out over the lagoon. It even had a stairway that leads into the lagoon for snorkeling or, in Vince's case, jet-skiing.

The St. Regis Bora Bora spans three islands and offers 91 villas. For those who have to slum it in a suite that doesn't have a private pool, there are two swimming pools and three private beaches where the resort's staff will spritz you with water and keep the tropical drinks coming.

For dinner, the hotel's signature restaurant, Lagoon—which is also suspended over the water and features breathtaking views of Mount Otemanu—serves up signature dishes by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten every night. Entrees run between $50-$60 a dish.

If this all seems like it would be outside your budget, it probably is. The room Vince Vaughn stayed in starts at $5,500 a night but the resort is offering a slightly more realistic "Couples Retreat" package through March 31st. The special includes accommodations in one of those over-water bungalows, daily breakfast, a couples massage, dinner for two and a bottle of champagne for a mere is $1,175 per night, with a four-night minimum stay. Break out the black AMEX card for this one.

re: Make Time For A 'Couples Retreat' In Bora Bora

Couples Retreat, at its heart, is a funny movie with a pretty solid premies that shoots itself in the foot repeatedly by not developing an identity for itself, acting like it's smarter than it is one minute, and the nose diving into unfunny nonsense slapstick comedy the next minute. A movie that starts pretty strong but leaves you feeling like the filmmakers didn't have a clear vision for where they wanted the film to go, and thus the movie stalls in the third act. Still, there were enough laughs and smiles in the film that I don't regret taking the time out to see it, and so overall I give Couples Retreat a 5 out of 10. So I think the producers behind this will not need any debt relief because of the success of the show.

While the movie was good, the location was definitely the real star of the film. In their interviews, each of the actors comment on the fact that while people may not believe it's actually that beautiful in Bora Bora, it really is. There's a lot of deals out there right now making Tahiti more affordable. But for those who really want to go and still find it out of their price range, www.investinyourlove.com is a great website where you can enter for a chance to win a trip to Tahiti.

My review

Instead of being a sharp, witty comedy about married couples experiencing kid friendly vacations therapy together, it's more of a pinheads-in-paradise routine with only a few funny lines.
