Top Chef's Eve Aronoff Brings The World To Your Plate In Ann Arbor

Where: 415 N 5th Ave [map], Ann Arbor, MI, United States, 48104

Even though Eve Aronoff's hopes of being named the next "Top Chef" were dashed on Episode Two, owing to a sub-par shrimp and avocado ceviche, the Ann Arbor chef still boasts an impressive résumé. A graduate of Paris' Le Cordon Bleu program, restauranteur in her own right, and cookbook author, she's known for bringing the world to the plate by fusing traditional French methods with exotic flavors.

Her restaurant, the appropriately named eve, opened in 2003 and reflects her worldly approach to cooking. Everything is seasonal and Slow Food Movement-approved, so expect ingredients to be sourced from the area's best farmers though her influences come from far flung corners of the world, including Africa, Cuba, and various Asian countries.

Because of its seasonality, the online menu is only a virtual amuse-bouche. You'll get an idea of what to expect at eve, but more likely than not, a different set of dishes when you pay the restaurant a visit. After looking it over, we'll admit to reeling at some of the entrée descriptions. There's quail marinated with chilis, limes, with French baked rice, "Inspired" nachos consisting of fried wontons topped with black beans, goat gouda, jack and cheddar, and crème fraîche, and a ricotta gnocchi "fried in butter...and draped with lardo" that sounds a little too heavy for our taste.

Could eve's love of fusion be overly ambitious at times? We'll have to reserve judgement, having not visited her namesake restaurant, but with the James Beard Foundation and Slow Food International having recognized her skills, it's safe to say Aronoff is no culinary novice.

The dessert selection looks much more promising, with a tequila and fresh lime granita and triple chocolate pots de crème finding their way onto the menu. And we love that every meal at eve ends "with her signature sugared mint leaves"—a refreshing coda to a flavorful jaunt around the globe.

i would actually want to eat here

she seems like she had all the skills and training but she was so meek on top chef. so it would be interesting to see what her food is like without the pressures of a quickfire or elimination challenge.
