Penguin Plunges Keep Burlington Fit

January 9, 2009 at 10:45 AM | by BS | 3 Comments

Don't know about you all, but we've spent the past week in heavy denial that the holidays are over. It's just so depressing--not only the whole back-to-work thing, but transitioning from two weeks of festive eating and drinking into a time when we're all supposed to be dieting and getting fit. Ugh.

So while we're certainly not about to stop writing about chili half smokes and 22,000-pound cakes, we'll at least make an effort to cover some healthy places too.

So where are these healthy destinations? According to the CDC, Burlington, Vermont is the healthiest city in America. Despite its proximity to the Ben and Jerry's factory, a full 92 percent of Burlingtonians are supposedly in good health. So what are all these hippies doing to stay so healthy, and how can we get in on it?

Turns out they don't let the whole horribly long winter thing drive them inside, instead turning the whole region into one giant outdoor adventure center. Burlington is surrounded by "the fantastic five," a ring of ski slopes all easily accessible from the city, and the entire area is a winter sports lover's paradise, with cross country ski and snowshoe routes just about everywhere you turn.

But if you're really into winter, check out Burlington on February 7 for the annual winter festival, where you can check out any of the above activities, as well as fun extras like a snow sculpting competition and the "Penguin Plunge," which involves bathing suits, zany costumes and some incredible cold water.

how do they resist Phish Food, my personal fave??? also penguin plunge sounds amazing, mainly because it doesnt involve old fat men racing into the ocean like those silly polar bear clubs.

Thoughts from a penguin plunge veterin

I've been living in VT for the past five years, and I have to say that it is fantastic! One of my favorite events here is the annual Lake Champlain Penguin Plunge. Although the water is a little cold, its a lot of fun and a great way to raise awareness for some very important causes. Now if you do decide to visit Vermont, I highly recommend checking out the Inn at Clearwater Pond in Quechee VT. My wife and I have been visiting this Inn for the past five years, and we love it! The staff is fantastic, and are very knowledgeable about VT and the surrounding area. The atmosphere here is fantastic as well. Once you arrive at the Inn, you immediately feel relaxed and at ease. As an individual with a rather stressful job, this is something that I highly appreciate. What I love most about the Inn though is the property that it sits on. The land surrounding the area is simply breathtaking, especially in the spring and summer.
