The Best Of The Inauguration Jams

January 6, 2009 at 5:26 PM | by colleenclark | 3 Comments

Inaugural weekends are usually set to a mix of John Philip Sousa marches and patriotic easy listening schmaltz. While we aren't above a little flag-waving (or karaoke renditions of Neil Diamond's "America"), we're psyched that the Obama bash holds much more interesting options for music lovers of all stripes. Here are our top picks:

January 16: Jay-Z kicks things off with an inaugural party at DC mega-club Love. Warning: It's in a rough neighborhood far outside the city. Parking is pricey and lines are long--and specific ticket information has yet to be released.

January 17: Didn’t get enough Love? Head back there again for Diddy's Inaugural Ball. Or, kick it skinny jeans style, with a night of indie rock songs about US Presidents at the music venue Sixth & I. Nellie McCay, Tim Fite and Dennison Witmer will join local DC favorites like These United States and Laura Burhenn to raise funds for conservation organization Bands for Lands. Tickets ($16) are available through Ticketmaster.

January 19: DC hipster mecca The Black Cat will be throwing The Big Shoulders Inauguration Ball with sets by Andrew Bird, Ted Leo, Tortoise and more. Tickets ($50) are available online through Ticketmaster.

January 20: Everyone from Kanye West to Yo-Yo Ma will be helping serenade Obama into office on the big day. Take your pick of the TRL-style acts likely to play the MTV/Service Nation ball, the hip hop luminaries throwing down for BET or head to Fur for a set with Mr. West. If you're insanely well connected, independently wealthy or a Kennedy, you might still be able to bribe your way into the Creative Coalition Ball, currently the hottest ticket in town. You can dance to Elvis Costello, Sting and Sam Moore alongside celebs like Maggie Gyllenhall, Anne Hathaway and Spike Lee.

    NE is DC too!

Love is indeed in a rough neighborhood, but it is not far outside the city. Northeast is DC too...although I have to admit I don't think I'll trek there as I'd be willing to bet Jay-Z will appear for ~ 5 mins. Now if you can get me tkts to the MTV ball, I'll take those of your hands

    Springsteen?

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inauguration-watch/2009/01/sources_springsteen_to_perform.html "The Presidential Inaugural Committee has been mum, but sources tell the Post's Lena Sun that Bruce Springsteen will perform at Barack Obama's inauguration week welcome event Jan. 18 on the National Mall. The event will be on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and open to the public for free.
