Where To Eat Frog Legs In Paris

Where: Paris, France
January 7, 2009 at 10:30 AM | by BS | 1 Comment

Believe it or not, French people don’t actually chow down on frogs on a daily basis. Despite all the jokes, frog legs are far less than an everyday necessity. (That spot is occupied by red wine.)

But what food-loving traveler could leave Paris without at least trying some of those legendary green legs? Many American tourists are appalled to learn that not every Parisian café actually serves the things, but with a little effort, there are plenty of legs to choose from. Here are a few solid bets:

The Safe Choice: Roger La Grenouille
While frog legs come and go as specials on many French menus, this tiny cafe always has them. (The name means "Roger the frog.") You'll need a reservation, and you won't be the only tourist by a long shot, but those crunchy amphibious morsels will always be in stock. 26-28, rue des Grands-Augustins

The Hot Spot: Allard
A 75-year-old classic bistro, Allard is most well known for its proclivity to host French movie stars, but beyond the glamor, they've got solid legs, along with all the other French standards, from foie gras to coq au van. 41, rue St-André-des-Arts

Fusion Frog: Asia Palace
It's not just the classic cafes that offer frog, many restaurants in Paris' Chinatown are down with the green as well, including this Cantonese spot, which serves them covered in black bean sauce or with ginger and chives. 22, rue Disque

Over-the-Top: Le Grand Vefour
Hey, this is a one time thing, right? So why not go all the way and visit this decadent palace of an eatery, where Louis XV and Napoleon got their frog leg fixes. Fine, they probably ordered the lobster, but we can pretend! 17, rue de Beaujolais

wish i had this list BEFORE

i ended up trying them at Le Ami Louis, apparently some really famous hole in the wall but expensive joint. and they still had the spines on them. vom. i sucked it up and fortunately, the whole dish was awash in garlic and butter so i could hardly tell. except for when i was staring at the SPINES.
