Five Airfare Sales We Like Right Now

January 6, 2009 at 2:00 PM | 0 Comments

We've always found rounding up air fare sales to be a rather hard service to do. Namely because so many people want to go so many destinations from so many places but only at certain prices. It would be akin to following the children, homes and vacations of Brangelina--but then trying to put limits on how much they can spend or how many children they can adopt.

Still, we don't want to deprive you of a chance to learn about a good fare to a cool destination that we've been talking about. So once a week, we're going to tell you how much it costs to get to a few places we have had our eyes on. These are the Five Air Sales We Like Right Now. Any tips on what you want to see more of or less of? Let us know. We're much nicer than Air India.

1. Jet Blue's More for Less Sale
The latest round of Jet Blue fares have us interested because the destinations are everywhere we want to go--like Las Vegas, New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

Rates start at $39 each way and flights must be booked seven days in advance. However, the sale only lasts through January 14. We tried to book a flight from Long Beach to Las Vegas and getting there was about $59--$10 less than what we found on Southwest leaving from LAX. The return trip, on a Sunday, was $129. Again, about $10 less than what we found on Southwest.

If you live near Long Beach, this deal is right for you. Otherwise, we say pay an extra $20 and stay close to LAX.

Restrictions: Black out dates of Feb. 11-16, 19-24. Fares are good from Jan. 12 to April 1.

2. bmi's "Better for Business" Sale
While Virgin Atlantic is keeping its sale fares close to its vest, bmi (yup, all lowercase) has launched phase two of its "Better for Business" Sale. Business travel folks in key US Gateway cities can fly through Heathrow with no blackout periods to cities in the UK, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa or Middle East.

An example fare? DC to Moscow is $343 each way in economy or $1,383 in business class. Also bmi recently added OnAir service for its passengers allowing them access to text messages and emails.

Restrictions: A round-trip purchase is required; sale is available for flights booked from January 5 until January 31 for travel until October 31, 2009. Also be aware that bmi is using codeshares here.

3. Frontier Airlines Four-Day Sale
Expedia is offering a four-day sale to/from Denver, perfect for those heading out to the slopes. Round-trip fares from Salt Lake to Denver start at $105; Los Angeles to Denver is $165. New York to Denver bumps up to $285.

Restrictions: A crapload of blackout dates. Sale ends on January 8. Tickets must be booked at least 14 days in advance. Travel is good through June 10, 2009.

4. New Routes to Oz
AmandaK's been rounding up the things to do in New South Wales but we still need a way to get Down Under. V Australia is launching on February 27 out of LAX for a round-trip of $1,000. Don't forget about the cool bar on board!

Delta is also selling fares that are $499 each way, now through Jan. 12. But those flights don't actually start until July 1--and by then it's winter in Oz again.

Restrictions: Um. It's January and you can't fly on Delta until July, meaning you are out of pocket $1,000 for the next seven months.

5. Just For the Hell of It Paris
We noticed Air France has a round trip from Los Angeles to Charles de Gaulle for $691, including all taxes, on Airfare Watchdog. We likey Paris.
Restrictions: Must be flexible with dates. (Note: Orly is further from the center of Paris but CDG is kind of run-down.)
