Restaurants On The Ground Are Out

January 6, 2009 at 11:45 AM | by BS | 1 Comment

Why eat in a plain-old ground-level restaurant when you can eat outdoors, high in the sky?

We've already told you about dining atop a giant concrete tree in Japan and in a crane 150 feet above the ground in Belgium. Now, the latest sky-high dining craze is the Yellow Treehouse restaurant, which opens this week in Auckland, New Zealand.

The treehouse is actually a promo for New Zealand's version of the Yellow Pages; everything was built using services found in the book. Despite the gimmick, we're still pretty excited because the place itself looks freaking awesome.

The orb-shaped dining room is set 33 feet above ground in a giant redwood tree, and it opens January 9. Lunch is NZ$95 ($56) a plate, while dinner is NZ$125, and the opulent seafood-heavy menu includes dishes like oysters with wasabi caviar and Asian-style char-grilled squid.

    Sky-High Restaurants

I love the concept of eating in unusual places. Maybe that's why I love train travel so much (I'm in the rail travel biz); one of my favorite activities on a train is eating in a well-served and -stocked dining car, staring out the window. In fact, one of my favorite trips of late was by train from Edinburgh to Alnwick Castle & Gardens in Northumberland, England. In the gardens you can eat at the fabulous "Treehouse Restaurant." Just make sure, however, that you reserve ahead of time. It's very popular. See: http://www.alnwickgarden.com/eat/eat-in-the-treehouse
