Some New Travel Gadgets Await At CES

If you're in Las Vegas this week and are wondering why there are so many pocket protectors around, it's because the annual Computer Electronics Show (CES) is taking place.

On Wednesday, geeks will descend on Las Vegas--some by car, most by plane and almost all of them filling up the city's lonely hotel rooms--for the world's largest consumer technology trade show. Here, companies will unveil their latest products, inventions and toys which will eventually be sold to the masses in 2009.

On the travel gear side, iGo--you know the company that sells like, a million different adapters and chargers for your laptops, cellphones and iPods--will show off their newest products for use on-the-go. The coolest one seems to be the iGo Laptop Charger which uses iGo Green Technology that reduces energy by thwarting "vampire power." (Yes, mention the word vampire and we're interested.)

Vampire power is the energy suckage that reduces your battery life even when a device is turned off or in stand-by mode. As anyone who travels frequently with a laptop knows, conserving battery power is all too important. Oh, the things we will do for an outlet. It's embarrassing actually.

iGo will debut more gear and accessories that travelers might want to know about. From the press release:

· iGo international travel adapter: Universal design covers more than 150 countries with US/UK/EU/AU plugs. Plus integrated USB outlet allows for charging devices.
· iGo multi card reader: Convenient 39-in-1 design reads and writes virtually any memory card format and includes integrated USB and native microSD slot.
· iGo laptop cleaning kit: Premium cleaning kit with six tools to safely clean your laptop and other devices.

That was a lot of tech specs to digest but we're loving the 39-in-1 card reader. Right now, ours is probably only 20-in-1. But we don't want to take the chances of being somewhere far from Radio Shack and missing out on those other 19 memory card types. As for the travel adapters, this isn't too much of a priority for us. Our old one sufficed on a recent trip to Europe and lately we found that some hotels abroad will offer guests adapters to use during their stays.

Aside from travel accessories, we're also getting amped about the new electric bikes and scooters that are to be unveiled at CES. Not only are these environmentally-friendly, but you can save some money too. Let's just hope there's a charging station nearby.
