Where to Stay:
The Fairmont Winnipeg is the leading luxury hotel in the region. Guest services are the hotel's specialty offering any amenity you could possibly think of. The property also boasts activities like horseback riding, skating, skiing and biking. The rates are considerably low too, around $229 a night, for all that the hotel offers.
Where to Eat:
What Winnipeg lacks in warmth it makes up for in cuisine. 529 Wellington is one of Winnipeg’s most popular restaurants, located on on the river in a restored mansion. It is considered by critics to be the finest steakhouse in Winnipeg and has won Wine Spectator Magazine's "Best of Award of Excellence". The prices are reasonable for a restaurant of this caliber. They also offer a less expensive lunch menu if you want the experience of fine dining without the additional credit card debt.
To really eat like the the film's stars, all you have to do is go to Cosco, buy a crock pot and cook all your meals in a hotel room. The rumor around Winnipeg is that Harry Connick Jr did just that during the entire shoot.
If you’ve given up on the New Year’s resolution and want to splurge, Baked Expectations is just the place to do so. Allegedly, they have the best cheesecake in all of Manitoba which you can get by the slice or better yet, buy a whole cake to go. It might just be the perfect ending to that crock pot special simmering in your hotel room.
What to See:
Assuming you fly to Winnipeg, you will have seen one of the movie’s filming locations before collecting your luggage. The Miami airport and plane scenes were all filmed on the second floor of Winnipeg's Richardson International Airport.
A must see when visiting Winnipeg is The Forks, a cultural center offering restaurants, shopping, a skate park, an IMAX theater, a flea market, a large recreational park, casinos, a new hotel and a spa. It has an interesting history, claiming that Aboriginal groups met at the site thousands of years ago and now they are trying to keep The Forks alive as a center of activity. Not to mention, SNL’r Siobhan Fallon Hogan was seen having dinner at The Forks several times before filming wrapped.
The cold didn’t keep Renee Zellweger holed up in her room either. The actress was spotted out on the town warming up with a coffee at Starbucks, doing some shopping, and even taking in the arts at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Current exhibits include "The Prints of Albrecht Durer" and "The Painter as Printmaker: Impressionist Prints from the National Gallery of Canada", both are open until March. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday year round, adult admission is $8.
