The Best Views Around Cape Town

January 26, 2009 at 4:24 PM | by femmefatale | 2 Comments

Monica Guy is joining us again this week to tell us what more there is to do in South Africa. Enjoy.

The best Best View in Cape Town, of course, is Table Mountain. But pick a clear day or you’ll be looking down at cotton wool (above). The weather does funny things around here and you have to get out slightly further afield for other "Best Views." That's where we come in. We've rounded up three more of Cape Town's best views in case the whole Table Mountain thing doesn't work out.

Best beach for a sundowner

Bloubergstrand, or Blue Mountain Beach – so-called either after the Blouberg mountain, or because the mountains look blue from here at sunset. Expect white sand beaches and rolling swell dotted with kite surfers. These cowboys swap their boards for Ben Sherman shirts when the sun goes down, and are to be found clustering in the Blue Peter Hotel bar.

Sip on a cold beer and gaze over the bluey Table Mountain and co. on the other side of the bay, with Robben Island out in front. It’s not the place for gourmet eats and treats, unless you like pizza and warm white wine, but it’s hard to beat that view.

Best mountain sunset view

If it’s a mountain view you’re after and you’re near Stellenbosch and the wine farms, head up into the Protea Hotel bar in Technopark, just off the R44. From the outside bar there’s a superb view of the mountains and vineyards that make this area so special. Colours galore and quiet, too.

Best road for a romantic night-time snog

When night falls and your girlfriend gets romantic, drive up the Plattekloof Road (check on the map) and park up on the hard shoulder. Twinkling fairy lights spread out before you. She won’t be able to resist.

    The Blue Peter Hotel?

Do they make you construct your own mini-bar using only old washing-up bottles and double-back sticky tape? (If you're not a Brit, fugeddaboutit.)

Looks lovely. Booze and views. You've found your spiritual home, Mon.

    Romantic?

I'm just having trouble imagining how I could "romantically" suggest to my bf we should drive along "Plattekloof Road". Most unromantic road name in history??
