Our Top Five Hawaii Fares of The Moment

January 23, 2009 at 2:42 PM | by kjb | 2 Comments

We already complained that winter is dragging along when we suggested where to get away overseas. However, maybe you want to stay in the nifty fifty since you’re still going strong on your Obama high. What’s a better option than Hawaii?

Of course the economy has been in the toilet, so the demand for a tropical vacation has been on the decline. For those with a jar of coins at home, it’s time to cash them in and book that trip to Honolulu. Things have been heading south since late last year, and if you can act quickly, you can get a good deal before spring starts.

1. Head Out From Orlando

If Mickey isn’t cutting it anymore and even Florida is feeling chilly, you’ll want to check out the fares that most of the major airlines are offering. Things look to stay under $500, all in, but can you put a price on escaping "God's Waiting Room"?

Restrictions: You’ll have to make a couple connections depending on your carrier, and things start to creep up as March rolls in. Oh, and your Nana might want to come along too.

2. Leaving the Desert Behind

If you’re looking to celebrate the Cardinals winning the big game, or need to get out of town since they blew it, there are plenty of options to Oahu. Hawaiian Airlines is offering fares from Phoenix non-stop to Honolulu for $338, all in. If you need to go a little later, US Airways is offering similar fares for slightly more.

Restrictions: Searching Kayak doesn’t seem to reveal any, but you will need to finish things by March 13.

3. Getting Out of the City

If you just need to get out of New York, no worries here. You'll be able to leave from Newark for only $535 non-stop on Continental to Honolulu. Once you’ve arrived in the Aloha state feel free to island-hop with all your savings.

Restrictions: Newark isn’t really New York, and the deal seems to fade away in May.

4. Saying Good-Bye To Detroit

For those stuck in the deep freeze of Detroit, there’s a good deal to escape the winter weather and auto industry death watch. Choose your favorite for $535 round-trip--Delta, Northwest, US Airways, or Continental. Sorry American, you’re like $100 more.

Restrictions: You’ll need to get there and back by March 4.

5. Two Islands Are More Fun Than One

Once you’ve reached Oahu, feel free to hop between the islands. Competition has heated up between the inter-island carriers, and a roundtrip jaunt can be had for under $70, all in. Check out the Big Island, Kauai, or Maui.

Restrictions: These are only available on Go!, and this airline has a less than stellar reputation.
