How's the WiFi Going On Delta?

January 22, 2009 at 9:33 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last summer Delta got us all excited when they announced that they’d be getting into the In-Flight WiFi game. Many months later, the planes are flying and the reviews have begun to trickle in.

Things are moving slowly, but at least there’s some progress. However, things need to speed up if they want to hit their initial promise of more than 330 enabled planes by this summer.

Of course, Delta’s own blog gives a positive review, so take this one with a grain of salt:

I’m onboard DL938…system is working great…logged into the Delta VPN checking e-mail, watching a video on Hulu, checking Gmail and chatting via Google chat…

The users over at Flyertalk are usually a little more critical, but they seem to be enjoying the new service--except for the price. One user writes:

Flew ATL-JAX on 12/27 on MD88 with Wi-Fi. I thought it read somewhere it was going to be free until 1/1 but the FA didn't have any info on that. I was able to connect just fine and go to the free sites (DL.COM, etc.) without any problem. So the hardware worked fine, but the pricing, $12.95/day I think, is totally insane.

The Delta shuttle from Boston to New York also seems to have gotten the WiFi treatment:

. . . Three of the planes being used for the Shuttle have Wifi- the reps told me it went live today. . .I used the Wifi for the whole 19-25 minutes you can use your computer on BOS-LGA flight, and it worked very well. . . I took a photo with my iSight and attached it an email. . . It does not work on the ground, only once your passed 10,000 feet.

So far, so good. Now hurry up Delta and get this service on more planes!
