How To Spend a Weekend in Philly for Under $100

The Betsy Ross House

Taking a cue from guidebooks like Europe on $80 a Day, we set up a challenge to see if taking a weekend trip from New York City was feasible for under $100. Unlike those guidebooks, this amount was to mean everything from accommodations to transportation for one person on a quest to enjoy the city.

Utilizing specials like the Megabus sale and dining seasonally, which in Philadelphia means cheesesteak, we managed to make it in well under the mark at a total of $93.81. It's just more proof that the recession can't suffocate wanderlust if travel brands continue to offer discounts. So what did we do in Philly, anyway?

The key to such an economical weekend is to keep the tourist antics to a minimum; we ate at a microbrewery, window-shopped on Walnut Street, strolled Rittenhouse Square as the snow fell, and only briefly made visits to Independence Hall and the morbid Mütter Museum at the College of Physicians. Nothing says relaxing weekend in the City of Brotherly Love like Pils, the Liberty Bell, and seeing a preserved 5-foot-long colon. Aside from beer, here's where our money went:

· Round-trip on Megabus via their sale: $0.50
· One night at the Apple Hostel in the Old City: $35.00
· Dinner and beer at a microbrewery: $17.00
· Sunday brunch at fancy diner: $14.00
· Latte and three flavors of gelato: $10.15
· Mütter Museum admission: $8.00
· Cheesesteak dinner: $7.16
· Subway ride: $2.00
· TOTAL: $93.81

There is hope for spontaneous travel after all. Have you scored an amazing deal or defied odds with a similarly budget escape? Tell us where!
