Have You Ever Successfully Used a TSA-Approved Laptop Bag?

January 19, 2009 at 11:32 AM | by BS | 7 Comments

The TSA's complicated new laptop bag rules didn't exactly have us running out to buy a shiny new carrying case, but of course we're always looking for anything with the potential to save us a minute or two on security lines.

So we're wondering if any of your have made the splurge. Anyone try the Targus Zip-Thru Corporate Traveler Laptop Case? We're down with the sleek TSA-approved design, but not ready to shell out the $100 price tag. Is it worth it? And more importantly, did it work? Because we'd hate to spend that much money and still have to remove our laptop from the bag.

What about the half-price TurboBag or any of the other imitators? Are they worth the investment? Did the scanners make you take your laptop out anyway?

    no.

i have a laptop sleeve but TSA always makes me remove it. and everyone in line with me is always like, "oh you can go through without taking your laptop out of the bag." and everytime i try, a TSA agent flips out. probably because they have been yelling "laptops out of the bag" at the top of their lungs for the past 4 hours. grrrrrr....

    Bleh.

I don't know. I know choosing fashion over function is not exactly practical, and travel should be all about practical, time-saving strategies, yada yada. But: I would never, ever bother with buying something like this -- even though I do travel a lot. I have this great orange Tumi bag that is super easy to open and close; and it's not THAT much of a pain to have to remove the laptop and place it in the bin; it's not like I'm not already removing my belt and cardigan and select jewelry items of questionable origin. We will revisit this when these bags are a) not so expensive b) girly-girl friendly and c) everyone else uses them so you dont have to stand there and explain how the bag is TSA friendly and you dont need to take the laptop out and yada yada.

    TSA Doesn't Recognize Anything Friendly

My husband and I travel extensively. We don't bother with such expensive bags. I have a rolling carry on that goes under the seat in front of me that holds my laptop and other niceties. We both just take our laptops out and have each others backs as they go through security. I think that the so called "TSA Approved" anything is just a marketing gimmick these days to get people to spend even more money on a bag that is not worth what is being asked for it. But that is my opinion. I honestly would not spend $100 for a laptop bag. You can do just as well with something lower priced.

    $100? No way.

I have a few times been able to put my laptop through without taking it out of its sleeve. But that's the sleeve I already own; I'm not going to shell out for a new one because when, inevitably, a TSA agent doesn't recognize it, I will be that much angrier at them for all of the set dressing of security theater. And anger and checkpoints don't mix.

    TSA Approved

I also work for a laptop bag company,SOLO, and, being in sales, I travel through a lot of airports. I have successfully carried my SOLO CheckFast bag through at least a dozen airports with no problem. The link to our CheckFast bags is http://www.solocases.com/cat.aspx?id=7. I am carrying the TCB310, MSRP 49.99, available at Best Buy and Office Depot. I could tell you what a great bag this is, but then I would sound like just another salesman . . .

Yes I have it. Yes I have successfully used it.

When my IBM bag was getting worn I asked for a checkpoint friendly bag from my IT department. This was actaully one of the cheapest ones available and so they got it for me and I've been using it for months now. I've taken it as far as from Boston to Hawaii, I've been to other many other cities in the US from coast to coast with it and have never had a TSA agent ask me to take the computer out. Even when they are yelling "take your computers out of your bags!. I just open it and drop it and it goes through no problem or questions. I even had 1 TSA agent ask to about it and she said that she had been telling others that this is what they should looking for. The TSA reguirements mean it doesn't hold as much as my old bag and the it isn't as versatile. So for the few efforts saved it may not be worth it to some. But as much as I travel and being I am a klutz and I juggle enough, so not having to take out the laptop is worth it to me. There were prettier bags and nicer bags available, but this was bought by the company so they didn't care too much about my desire for style too.
