2008's Best Travel Blog: There's Something About Kugels

January 18, 2009 at 12:36 PM | by Victor Ozols | 7 Comments

The results of the 2008 Weblog Awards are in, and the winner for Best Travel Blog is ... MyKugelhopf. To be honest, I had never heard of MyKugelhopf before the poll came around, but I had a look at it and have to hand it to creator Kerrin Rousset. The Zurich-based New Yorker has a nice-looking and frequently-updated website about food and travel, with tight writing, quality photography, and wide range of destinations and yummy-looking foods. In fact, she travels so much, to so many exotic locations, that I wonder if she has a regular job outside of this blog thing. Could this be her main job? It doesn't even carry any advertising! However she does it, it's a winner, so congratulations to Ms. Rousset. Incidentally, MyKugelhopf is named after a sweetened bread, similar to brioche, that is enjoyed in France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It's probably quite good with coffee.

Coming in at second by a razor-thin margin of 29 votes was a blog I actually had heard of, the tenacious online airline watchdog known as The Cranky Flier. And the bronze medal went to Intelligent Travel, the slick-looking travel blog of National Geographic Traveler. Isn't it odd that the blog associated with a major name in travel and scholarship came in third to two upstarts? I guess that's the wild, woolly world of the internet for you. No respect for the legacy brands.

As for Jaunted, we placed ... well, let's just say we helped make the winner possible. So we offer kudos to all the travel bloggers out there, and best of luck on the quest for the 2009 Weblog Award. Hey, how much money does the winner get, anyway?

    And I might add

Jaunted was the only blog on that list with a sense of humor. The rest are so earnest and sincere, with their wide-eyed wonder at the world.

    Be sure to dunk !

Hi there! Kerrin Rousset here! A big thank you for this post, very much appreciated. I'm a big fan of Jaunted (still thinking about my perfect cookie ice cream combo from earlier this month!), so it was a fun surprise to find this post today. To answer your question - nope, no ads and no $$$ from the blog itself. I am a food and travel writer - so my regular job is to travel, eat, photograph and write all about it. I hope your readers will enjoy MyKugelhopf in addition to their regular reading of Jaunted. Oh, and yes, kugelhopf is most definitely good with coffee - especially if you dunk. :)

    There's always next year...

Jaunted's my favorite travel blog too. Tight writing, interesting observations, and a wide range of topics and destinations covered--all served up with a good dose of humor.
