· Apparently L.A. has always been about extravagance. Before she became the image capital of the world, Los Angeles was named, “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de la Porciuncula,” when she was founded in 1781. Now that’s a mouthful. In English, it roughly means: “The Town of our Lady, Queen of the Angels of Indulgence.” Half of us is glad they shortened it, while half of us kind of wishes they had kept the 14-word name.

· It has 6 area codes—213, 310, 323, 424, 626, 818—more than any other American city. And four of them are palindromes!

· LA-Orange County ranks second in the number women-owned businesses. The top market is New York/Newark, New Jersey. But we don’t think Newark should count as New York, so we’re going to claim victory anyway.

· Here’s a scary thought: because of the entertainment industry, there are more “artists” (writers, actors, musicians, etc.) living in Los Angeles than in any other city at any other time in history!

· Los Angeles is home to more than 80 stage theaters and 300 museums. We know that’s what you come to see, totally. But if you do have time, check out the Museum of Neon Art.

· There are over 170 colleges and universities in Los Angeles—and we’re not even including the acting schools.

· The merry-go-round on the Santa Monica Pier was featured in the movie, “The Sting.”

· The economy of the city of Los Angeles is ranked as the fourth largest economy in the United States, as compared to other cities and states.

· Among other drinks, the Shirley Temple was invented here at the Brown Derby Restaurant. Don’t be ashamed, we know you like yours with extra cherries.
