1. Cathay Pacific's "Year of the Ox" Special Fares to Asia
So 2008 wasn't as good a year for tourism as China hoped, but that doesn't mean they can't start out '09 with a crazy airfare deal! Not only are these some of the cheapest all-in round trips we've seen, but they're also non-stops on highly-rated Cathay Pacific.
For the best value, head from New York direct to Hong Kong between February 1-28 for $795, all-in. They've also got Bangkok, Beijing, Fukuoka, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei from Los Angeles or San Francisco up for grabs, but expect to add at least $70 extra for those itineraries.
Restrictions: Book by January 31 for travel through April 30; the lowest rates appear in February.
2. Air New Zealand's multi-stop spectacular for under $1,000
Thinking spring, Air New Zealand has busted out with a doozy of a long-haul deal. For $878 all-in, you can spend May flying from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Auckland with an optional free stopover in between.
Take a breather down under with a few days in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns or the Gold Coast. Or, if you're leaving from LA, work on your Pacific tan on the Cook Islands, Samoa or Tonga. For those with a lot of vacation time, this under $1,000 airfare deal could mean two vacations in one.
Restrictions: Book by January 19 (step on it!) for travel May 1-May 31.
3. Alaska Airlines' Winter Clearance Sale
Follow our trail to the ski slopes in Whistler, British Columbia with flight deals to Vancouver from Los Angeles on Alaska Air. Luckily, the low rates aren't restricted to only Angelenos; they'll even let places like Washington, DC and Sacramento play in their powder.
Although the best rates are obviously from the west coast--like $227 round-trip plus taxes from Los Angeles--the DC route maxes out at $500 round-trip, which is pretty alright for an international, coast-to-coast pleasure trip.
Restrictions: Book by February 5 for travel through February 12; it ends just before the Valentine's travel rush.
4. The "OMG, Alitalia Is Still in Business" Sale
So it's not a real sale, per se, but shaky Italian airline Alitalia is throwing out some seriously discounted fares to keep those stingy tourists coming to their capital.
All it takes to get you some face time with dudes dressed as gladiators is $560 (plus tax) and a passport. Jet to Rome yet this month for the lowest fares, since they think that 50 degrees a cold winter. They'll know you're a tourist because you'll be the only one not wearing a down jacket.
Restrictions: Checking dates on Kayak.com, we found the $560 deal good for last-minute travel through the beginning of February. Book ASAP and travel just as quickly.
5. Open Skies' 2009 Fashion Collections Special
Have you always wanted to fly on a luxurious plane, surrounded by beautiful women dressed in the latest styles? Now that Womens Wear Daily has partnered up with British Airways' Open Skies to offer 20 percent off top-class flights from New York to fashion capitals Paris and Amsterdam, you maybe can.
When booking an Open Skies flight on one of these routes, be sure to enter promo code WWDAILY9, and reap the benefits of discounted premium transatlantic service through May 31. While the airline is hoping to fill their flights with the chic readers of WWD, they have sadly misjudged the migration patterns of fashionistas. After New York Fashion Week in February, everyone flies straight from Newark to London to Milan for the next shows, not to Paris or Amsterdam. Sorry to crush your glamorous dreams.
Restrictions: Use the promo code above and book by March 31 for travel now until May 31.
