Cold Water Surfing, Now Even For Wimps

January 15, 2009 at 10:02 AM | by BS | 3 Comments

We've seen a lot of stories about cold-water surfing destinations lately--London, Maine, Cleveland--and while we're pretty impressed with surfers who are that hardcore, it still sounds kind of, well, insane. But that was before we heard about the H-Bomb, which could actually bring anywhere-surfing to the masses in the not-so-distant future.

When we first heard there was a heated wetsuit, we assumed it was some futuristic Japanese invention that would come our way in about 50 years, but the H-Bomb was actually developed by long-established surfing company Ripcurl. It's not some space-age outfit but a lightweight neoprene suit with a rechargeable lithium battery that uses carbon fiber technology to keep you warm for three hours. Neat.

The catch? That would be the $1,100 price tag. But we're still desperate to at least try one out. Ripcurl has a list of surfshops carrying the suits, most of which are in Cali, which we think is pretty damn unfair considering they don't really need them there.

But there are a couple of Northeast places too, the most deserving of which would be New Hampshire's Pioneers Board Shop. Who's up for a late-January New England surf trip?

Anyone try the H-Bomb out yet? Let us know.

    Cold water

The water in California can get pretty damn cold, too...Mid 50s this time of year and rarely above 70 in the summer. Not exactly warm.

ha, yeah I know, it's not all roses and sunshine there, especially in NoCal, but come on, don't complain to us - it's 47 below in the rest of the country right now.

    yes but

the water can even be too cold to swim in even during summertime. which is ridiculous! and in los angeles, the water is so dirty that you have to really go down to san diego or orange county to enjoy some warmer waves.
