The Truth About Grenada's "New" Dress Code

Your epidermis is showing! Grenada's police commissioner caused an uproar this week when he announced he'll begin to enforce a little known section of the public decency code which prohibits wearing an uncovered swimsuit away from the beach, as well as baggy pants on both genders.

Interestingly, the measure isn't aimed at nudist tourists but those dang kids: In a press conference December 29, Commissioner James Clarkson of the Royal Grenada Police Force said there's nothing wrong with teenagers dressing casually, but "any time you allow lawlessness to start taking effect on your country, you have a problem." He continued in the vein of every assistant principal ever, "It is funny when people are not used to a certain level of freedom to do certain things, when you give them that freedom they just don’t know how to handle it." Violators could allegedly face a fine of $270 or six months in prison.

Before he became the laughingstock of the Internet, Clarkson was known for reorganizing and cleaning up the police force since he took office last August, including charging his own superintendent with shredding secret documents and uncovering other corruption in the force. The measure is unlikely to garner him any local fans; YingYang of BlahBlohBlog says the jeans portion "is causing a ruckus locally," and Maria of Pisces in Purple writes "this is a perfect example of how amateur some so-called Grenadian professionals are."

But Grenada Today, the island's largest newspaper, supports the measure, writing in an unsigned editorial that local trends in fashion are:

Unbecoming of decency and only seek to promote promiscuity, indecency and decadent behavior in the society. What is acceptable in North America is not necessarily good and should be accepted by us in this part of the world.

We couldn't pull up what appears to be the RGPF's official site, except cached, but this looks and smells like one man's crazy pet project. And what will Grenada do during Carnival? But as with decency laws in Dubai, the island will probably let foreign offenders off with fines instead of jail time, so they don't inadvertently kill the golden goose--or rather, the gargantuan American-packed golden gooses making shore excursions.
