The Royal Mail Has Your Concorde Fix

January 13, 2009 at 1:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

This month is the perfect time for the design-inclined to be in London. The Tate Modern has Mark Rothko's work hanging the wrong way, the city is in love with old Chinese artifacts and the Royal Mail has just released a limited series of "British Design Classics" stamps.

Since a healthy stamp collection is a time-honored form of armchair travel, it's not surprising that half of the stamps in the British Design collection pay homage to legendary forms of transportation. We're talking everything from the Concorde to the map of the London Underground and even a little dose of the double-decker Routemaster bus.

It's the good old Mini, however, that really steals the limelight in the stamp collection. Even the Royal Mail admits their love for the runt:

Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, the revolutionary small car remained in production until 2000 and is the most popular British designed and built car ever. Not only that but its stylish design made it a hit with the trend setters of the swinging sixties with everyone from John Lennon and Marianne Faithfull to Peter Sellers and Steve McQueen owning one.

Although we are a little suspicious of the fact that this British collection is being released exactly a year after the US launched the Eames Design stamp series, we are down with whatever philatelic means are necessary to get our snail mail going faster, even if it means having to lick the Concorde.
