Theme Parks Travel: Astroland (Probably) Closes Its Doors

September 9, 2008 at 4:15 PM | by kjb | 0 Comments

The rumors have been flying since last season, but this year it seems that the stories are true. Astroland, the theme park of New York City, closed down over the weekend. The New York Times reports that the park owners just couldn't get things worked out with the group that was funding the park this year.

The Albert family, owner of the park, sold the land to Thor Equities in 2006 for about $30 million, so this has all really just been a matter of time.

With the park's final hours upon it, many chose to visit the park one last time to get that last ride in before the power went off. (Gawker's Sheila McClear "tried to win a dirty stuffed clownfish from the Claw machine" on Sunday!) For the next few weeks, employees will still be around, as they begin the task of disassembling the rides and attractions.

If you're interested in setting up your own Coney Island, many of these rides have begun to appear on Rides-4-U, a supplier of used and new theme park rides.)

If there's any good news in this closure, it is that the famous Cyclone coaster will continue to operate next year. And at least the Dreamland Roller Rink will be around for a while!
