New Museums Travel: Art and Design in NYC

We love it when the right things end up in the right place, like the excellent, soon-to-open (Sept. 27) new space for the Museum of Arts and Design. You can't miss the building: It's the sleek, tower originally done in 1964 by Edward Durell Stone on Columbus Circle.

With more than double the exhibition space of the current location (including, for the first time ever permanent gallery space), a restaurant on the ninth floor (with sweeping views of the park) and a Tiffany & Co. Foundation Jewelry Gallery on the second floor, it's definitely a step up for the museum.

Architect Brad Cloepfil, who's in charge of the new space, was chosen from a group of four finalists in a formal competition for the project. He's integrated cool features like more gallery space, more natural light and glazed terra cotta tile on the exterior. (Though some people don't care for the space-agey facade, we like it.)

Ready to handle an estimated 500,000 visitors a year, the new museum will also have educational programs and three artist-in-residence studios, making it the first multi-disciplinary institution to offer hands-on art-making as part of the museum experience. Admission will be $15.
