Movie Set Travel: Everybody Wants to Be Italian

September 5, 2008 at 8:15 AM | 0 Comments

Movies that play off the characteristics of various ethnicities (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, My Blue Heaven) seem to be safe bets: Throw in some quirky accents, familial hijinks and a romance or two and you're set. This week's pick, Everybody Wants to Be Italian, falls squarely in that camp.

Jake has spent eight years trying to win back his ex-girlfriend to no avail when his friends set him up on a blind date with a beautiful Italian veterinarian from Boston's North End. Her big sticking point? She's only into Italians and Jake isn't one. But he learns to fake it and does everything he can to win her heart.

Yep, it's corn-syrupy sweet and tries hard, but also is good for a few laughs. The film was actually shot in Boston; read on for some cool things to get you in the back-to-school spirit in Beantown this fall.

Where To Stay: Charlesmark Hotel
Originally built in 1892 as a private Back Bay residence, The Charlesmark has been renovated and converted into a hip little boutique hotel. Rooms are fairly inexpensive and no-frills (think VCRs not DVDs and no room service), but are tidy with comfy furnishings. The location's the bonus here and perks include continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi.

Where To Eat: Mamma Maria
Make like the movie and head to this institution in the North End. Yes, the name's uber-cheesy, but the menu's more sophisticated than one might expect with dishes like Sardinian lamb served with Merguez sausage. You also won't find a single red-checked tablecloth.

What to See:Fogg Art Museum/Harvard Art Museum
Cross the river into Cambridge and check out one of Harvard's lesser-known treasures. Currently going through a transformation and collaboration with two of the institution's other arts giants, selected works from the Fogg's 80,000 piece collection are on display.
