First-Person Medical Tourism: How Are the Dentists in Bangkok?

September 4, 2008 at 4:00 PM | by pbb | 1 Comment

Geopolitics junkie and Knife Tricks blogger Paul Karl Lukacs had a bit of an oral revelation the other day, and since it's 2008, he blogged about it. Problem? Infected wisdom tooth. Solution? Surgery at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand.

Lukacs is turning the adventure into a multi-part series, answering hypothetical questions (eg: "You're doing this in Bangkok!?"), detailing his initial consultation (total cost, including prescription pain killers: $19.70) and getting gritty:

This is the part where I'm warned about nerve damage....

Dr. Dheera explained that he specialized in extracting wisdom teeth under local anesthesia, two teeth at a time. Removing all four would take about two weeks. He estimated a total cost for his services of about 20,000 baht ($610).

He also recommended that I consult with a different oral surgeon about having all four teeth removed simultaneously, which requires general anesthesia and admittance to the hospital.

The adventure is far from over, but Lukacs promises to keep the details coming:

Are you going to blog about this?

In detail.
