Shopping Travel: Slave to Fashion in San Francisco

October 1, 2008 at 9:45 AM | 0 Comments

It's always a perk to visit a city and have a close friend to show you the best spots to shop. You know, nowhere near the mega-chains, but full of local flavor and artistry. The result is usually a new closetful of pieces (and an empty wallet) that beg the question 'Where did you get that?' and the satisfaction of knowing your look can't be replicated by anyone back home.

If you don't have a friend in San Fran, or are looking for the ultimate insider shopping tour, check out Fashion Slave Tours by Kim Connector. She'll show you independent fashion enclaves in neighborhoods like the Mission, the Haight, Union Street, the Fillmore District and Hayes Valley where shoppers can find one-of-kind wardrobe additions.

This means stores like RAG Co-Op, or Residents Apparel Group, which features pieces from only local SF designers and is set up much like an art gallery with the clothes on display. Another stop on the tour is Lemon Twist, (above) where the clothes are cut and sewn in the city.

Tours start from $250 and go up; most are around two or three hours and include transportation. If it's too much for you or you're looking for something a little more high-brow while in town, make sure you get to the DeYoung Museum on November first. It'll be opening a 40-year retrospective of the work of Yves Saint Laurent, the only US venue for the show.

Happy hunting!
