Green Travel: Keeping It Real in Upstate NY

September 3, 2008 at 12:00 PM | by Dan Gould | 0 Comments

If you're looking to do some green travel, and do it right, look no further than the Pollywogg Holler Eco Resort. Nestled up north in western New York state, this place is the real deal.

Surrounded by nothing but untouched nature, you can get away from it all while roughing it in high style. Just don't call it glamping.

Owners Bill and Barbara Castle dropped out of the rat race 30 years ago and built the resort as a simple, "back to the land" hideout where people can enjoy eco-friendly, simple living. The Pollywogg features handmade log cabins that are rustic and beautiful, set amongst frolicking animals and pristine forests.

Far from being a primitive camp, the Pollywogg has a good deal of amenities to wash away stress. The Finnish sauna will clean toxins from your system, and Bill and Barbara's delicious homemade wine will keep you feeling good. Wood fired ovens and outdoor grills are also at your service, churning out pizzas and steaks. Artwork from students from nearby Alfred College is scattered throughout the hiking trails, which are open for cross country skiing in the winter.

But, even with all the extras, Pollywogg still does the whole eco-roughing it thing. Heat and light are provided by wood stoves and kerosene lamps; gravity-pumped spring water feeds the outdoor showers. Oh, and by the way, there is no indoor pluming. An efficient composting toilet is used instead.
