Coming Soon to JFK: Edible Food

Complaining about airline food - or what's left of it - is an age-old pastime, but we've always had a soft spot in our hearts for those dried-up beef medallions and tiny iceberg lettuce salads with two radish slices and one lonely cherry tomato. After all, if you're eating an airline meal, it means you're on your way somewhere, and everything tastes better when you're traveling. We hold no such love for the restaurants in most airports, which is why efforts to bring "humanity" to the dining options in JetBlue's new Terminal 5 at JFK are most welcome.

USA Today chats with the head honcho of OTG Management, who says that full-service restaurants and bars, a gourmet health-food market, and futuristic seating clusters near the gates that allow travelers to order food from a touch-screen display will actually make people want to arrive at the airport early. While that remains to be seen, the company has certainly tapped some major talent in its efforts to class up the joint. Chefs from swanky New York restaurants like Del Posto, Buddakan, and Rosa Mexicana will consult on the new eateries, which will range in price from $10 a meal to upwards of $50.

We don't know if a utilitarian place like an airport is suited for haute cuisine, but given all the waiting around that's asked of air travelers these days, it seems likely that people will pay up for tastier food and a pleasant place to chill. After all, it's kind of depressing to think that Sbarro and Cinnabon are all the traveling public really deserves.
