The Austin Film Festival hosts narratives, documentaries and even animation. Speaking of which, Greg Daniels, co-creator of "King of the Hill" and a "Simpsons" writer, will be on hand to speak about his experiences. The festival is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, so that unique film you're watching for the first time may just find its way into an envelope during the Oscars.
Where to Stay:
After a long day of critiquing movies, you'll want somewhere to relax where there's nothing to worry about. The Driskill Hotel, in downtown Austin, is that place. Named to the National Register of Historic Places, it was constructed in 1886 by cattle baron Jesse Driskill.
The hotel has all the amenities that one would expect in a historic luxury hotel, including original artwork, antiques and a cowhide sofa; it also hosted President Lyndon Johnson's first date with his future wife. For those coming home a little hungry after a long day of films, the 1886 Café and Bakery is open nightly to pick up a sweet treat. Rates for the festival weekend start at $364.
Where to Eat:
Fast during the morning and then head to Fonda San Miguel for an evening fill-up of Tex-Mex. Happy hour happens on Mondays and Tuesdays, so if you're staying through the week, you can enjoy some cheap margaritas. And if the dinner portions weren't big enough, there's always Sunday brunch.
Where to Listen:
If you haven't already heard, Austin is the live music capital of the world, so you might as well go check out that scene while you're in town. The Flamingo Cantina offers national touring acts most nights of the week. During the festival weekend, the club welcomes Subrosa Union and The Reddies.
