Animal Travel: Attack of the Sea Eagles

September 24, 2008 at 11:05 AM | 0 Comments

Though the skies are clear and the air mild for tourism in the hills of Scotland this time of year, right now is a lousy time to be a lamb there. Farmers in the Northwest highlands are reporting that 15 whitetail sea eagles, an endangered species, have wreaked havoc on the region, devouring more than 200 of their littlest sheep.

After being released back into the wild in August, the victims soon became the aggressors. Farmers are angry that the nature groups releasing the birds neglected to consult them on the impact. The result sounds more like a B horror movie than a feat of conservation:

We've had lambs that have had their necks sliced, they then can't lift them and are found going round in circles.

Lamb autopsies come back with reports of talon damage and injuries caused by being dropped from a height, the story says. A farmer around one sea eagle's nest described the area as a "sheep's graveyard." Sounds worse than anything Alfred Hitchcock could've dreamed up.
