Post-Olympics Travel: China's Afterglow

September 22, 2008 at 11:30 AM | 0 Comments

The Olympics paid off in more ways than one for China. Sure, the country got awesome new hotels, venues and infrastructure built, but now, post-games, the country's also experiencing a boom in tourism. The New York Times reports that travelers want to experience for themselves what their favorite Olympians did--and tour groups are seeing bookings jump as much as 20 percent.

One very popular tour? The FAR Agency's Olympic architecture trip, where visitors see groundbreaking projects like the Bird's Nest and Norman Foster's Terminal 3 at the Beijing airport. A second tour is planned for April '09 already.

As China's popularity grows, access and offerings will become more plentiful. American Airlines plans to add a nonstop flight between Chicago and Beijing in 2010 and Victoria Cruises, which specializes in trips on the Yangtze, will introduce its eighth ship this coming spring.

China knew this would happen all along, says a spokesman, who claimed the country has made tourism a serious goal and priority since the mid-'90s. That may be true, but we have to think the Olympics did a little something to help!
