It takes a dire occasion indeed for a van der Woodsen or a Waldorf to leave her home borough. But "Gossip Girl" creator Cecily von Ziegesar seemed happy to be reading from the book that started it all, the very first dispatch filed by the Gossip Girl herself, at the Brooklyn Book Festival yesterday.

"I used to call it a web column, I didn't know the word blog even existed," the blonde, collected von Ziegesar said of the commentary that became the voiceover of the show we love. A disappointed YA editor, she wanted to write about "approachable" characters against the backdrop of her own adolescence at an Upper East Side private school. (Her favorite character is Blair, as a multi-dimensional queen bee who "act on every impulse she has.")

Von Ziegesar has almost no involvement with the show, but she praised the CW for getting the budget to film in Manhattan (after believing "OC" creator Josh Schwartz would attempt to move it to California) and regrets only the adaptation of Vanessa to the big screen. Us too!

Plot lines from the "Gossip Girl" series (published by Alloy) will be making appearances in the CW series this year, so if you haven't already read them, OMG, what are you waiting for?
