Nowness Travel: Atlantic City for Non-Gamblers?

August 6, 2008 at 12:00 PM | by | Comments (3)

The Washington Post travel section visited Atlantic City this weekend and filed quite the report on the city's recently amped-up efforts to attract the under-75, non-gaming crowd:

Two recent additions to the hotel landscape, Harrah's Resort's Waterfront Tower and Borgata's Water Club, have separated themselves from the casino ruckus, providing a pair of tranquil planets within the gambling universe.

It also helps that both hotels are away from the Boardwalk, in the more secluded marina area, which cuts down on drop-in traffic.

It's hard to imagine that AC will bring the Jersey masses away from their little shore towns anytime soon, but then again, who would have thought Vegas could transform its gambling-and-hookers rep into a world-class nightlife city?

The WaPo did enjoy a stay at the Water Club, which sure sounds more luxurious than the hotels we've stayed at in Jersey, and it's even attracting some celebs. Well, quasi-celebs anyway:

To be sure, the Water Club has kicked up the level of grandeur in Atlantic City and is attracting those who live by infinity pools and high thread counts.

Last week, for example, the stars of Bravo's "Real Housewives of Orange County" were staying at the hotel. I saw the camera crew but never the wives. Eventually, I asked if they were coming down and was told that they were holed up in their suite. Seems they too were powerless against the rich leather pillows, Italian marble showers and silky sheets.

Maybe a hipster invasion will lure them out?
