When we took the survey, the current economy meal and a "gourmet salad" were both priced at $19, while a "premium sandwich" was priced at $12. A "restaurant style meal" with multiple courses could potentially go for $39. United is tweaking the prices for different survey takers to gauge their price sensitivity. Smart!
The stand-out question, though, didn't have to do with sandwiches or salads. United wants to know if you'd be able to expense your in-flight meal, which would certainly make a difference in terms of pricing--something former Virgin America head Fred Reid was well aware of.
The weird thing, though, was that United didn't ask whether or not you'd actually want any of these things; the airline simply wanted to know how much you'd pay for them. Sitting here at our desk with a cup of coffee and a snack, we didn't think any of the offerings looked too appealing, but 12 hours into an international flight, stomach growling, maybe our wallets would be more likely to come out?
