Beach Travel: Mo Needles, Mo Problems

August 29, 2008 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (4)

There's more trouble for fans of the beach, especially with the long holiday weekend just hours away. Apparently, medical waste has begun to wash up along New Jersey coast. The town of Avalon has made out the worst, with between 100 and 200 syringes found littering the beach along with gauze and other medical waste. The town was forced to close portions of the sand, but town leaders insist things will be fine for the weekend.

Just yesterday, in Ocean City, about 15 miles north of Avalon, there were two needles discovered on the beach. The county health department didn't seem too alarmed and stated that that their waste doesn't appear to be related to the stuff just up the coast. Although things look OK for now, many tourists are questioning last minute plans and even vacation rentals booked months in advance.

The attorney general's office is looking into the matter and is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that will help them get to the bottom of things.

Years ago, I found a needle on top of the snow in my front yard. At least these people get a beach with their needles.

i am...

Currently headed to the Jersey shore and will prove tourists that NOT every beach has needles!!! I'll snap a pic on my camera and prove Jersey isn't the armpit of America.

Note: Born and raised here in Jersey! Plainfield, NJ :-)

jersey is the brad pitt of america!

anyone who knows Chunky Pam knows what we are talking about. to be fair, i did encounter a need on the jersey shore but hello! that was like in the 80s. xoxo, union county girl.

That incident was a complete fluke

There should be a follow-up article about this fluke event. It turns out that a few needles were thrown over-board a boat by a private doctor. He was identified and arrested within two weeks of the event.
In 2008 Ocean City, New Jersey, was voted the number one family resort in the country by The Travel Channel. That was the third time in three years Ocean City won that award.
While Christie Whitman, a former NJ govenor, was head of the EPA she was happy to note that New Jersey's beaches were rated the cleanest on the east coast of the United States both before, and during, her stay at the EPA.
It's a shame none of these facts are mentioned here.
