Movie Set Travel: Babylon A.D.

August 29, 2008 at 9:00 AM | 0 Comments

We have to admit, this Labor Day weekend's movie releases are a little on the slim side, so don't slight us for recommending Vin Diesel! We're more into Babylon A.D.'s mindless action and its interesting mix of other names, including Michelle Yeoh, Charlotte Rampling and even Gérard Depardieu.

Babylon A.D. is the story of a mercenary assigned to escort a woman from Russia to America. Miraculously unbeknownst to him, she is hosting an organism wanted by a cult in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah. (Happens every day people...) We hear this one is all action and has, um, similar plot points to other popular films, but hey, it's an easy way to cool off in theaters on a hot summer afternoon.

While the film was shot in countries all over Europe, we've decided to pick out some cool things to see and do in one of our favorite spots, Sweden.

Where to Stay: Berns Hotel, Stockholm
Berns is a boutique hotel that's actually comfortable. Rooms come in clever sizes (XS to XL) and feature fun amenities like a signature "Berns" scent, tons of glossy mags to read and complimentary shoeshines for guests. With only 65 rooms, it's an intimate spot and the staff makes you feel that way with personalized service and tons of advice (and access to) area hotspots.

Where to Eat: Restaurant 28+, Gothenburg
One of Gothenburg's great restaurants, 28+ is known for being innovative and experimental with its offerings--so forget lingonberries and meatballs! Here, you're apt to find grilled breast of pigeon (not the NYC kind!) or saddle of reindeer with Jerusalem artichokes and blackberry vinaigrette. To seriously indulge, go for the tasting menu.

What to See: Orrefors Glassworks, Orrefors, Småland
Founded in 1898, Orrefors is one of the country's most famous glass factories. The company pioneered some of the cooler designs in glassware including inserting colored reliefs and air bubbles into layers of glass for texture and style.
