If you're looking for a good excuse to head to San Diego for a girls-only weekend, then the San Diego Women's Film Festival is probably a great one. The well established event is celebrating its sixth year of supporting female filmmakers and this year looks to welcome over 400 independent films.

From October 2 to 5, the festival seeks to illustrate positive messages about relevant social issues. The films will focus on ideas relating to ethnicity, class, culture and gender. Be sure to note your favorite, as the festival has screened some films that have gone on to win Oscars. The events begin on Thursday with a preview party at the Reading Cinemas' Gaslamp Stadium 15 and continue there throughout the weekend. An all access pass is $50.

Where to Stay:
If you're coming for the weekend, your best bet for lodging is going to be the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Located just over the bridge from San Diego proper, the hotel is currently running a "Girls' Night In" promotion. You'll receive a one-night stay in a deluxe double guest room as well as two resort robes upon arrival.

Relax with a 50-minute massage in the resort's spa, then enjoy a midnight snack complete with brownies and ice cream delivered right to your door. Rates for the festival weekend begin at $579.

Where to Drink:
A weekend with your favorite girlfriends is all about fun, so you probably aren't looking to head to the nearest meat market bar. Luckily, Mister Tiki Mai Tai Lounge is around, and will certainly fit your need for a few beverages. "Martikis" start at $8 and include the Ruby Dagger and the Sake Tsunami. There's also sushi and many entrees with a kitschy island flare if you're also looking for some food.

Where to Find Even More Art:
If you grow tired of films and just want to take in something artsy that's a little more "still," then the San Diego Museum of Art has what you're looking for. Through the end of October the museum has an exhibit, Historical Takes, on the works of female artist Eleanor Antin. The exhibit focuses on a series of large-scale tableaux photos based on Greek and Roman history. Antin has been a pioneer in the feminist art movement, and will definitely keep you feeling proud to be a woman all weekend long.

If you're in town before the end of September, there's also an exhibit on Georgia O'Keeffe.
