End of Summer Travel: Coney Island's Dreamland Roller Rink

August 28, 2008 at 12:00 PM | by BS | 0 Comments

Thousands of New Yorkers and visitors have flooded Coney Island this summer to get one last fix of the freakish festival, before many of the old-school attractions are knocked down to make way for newer, shinier rides next year. (Or maybe not, they can't seem to make up their minds about this thing.)

But one new Coney Island venue is already here, and we can say that this newcomer is definitely in the cheesy, lo-fi tradition that made Coney Island famous.

Dreamland Roller Rink, the brainchild of Lola Staar, founder of the Save Coney Island group, is a disco-heavy, costume-wearing homage to '70s roller-skating parties. As summer unofficially ends this weekend, Dreamland is hosting a few more unique events, including a Bollywood skate party on Friday and a Saturday Night Fever skate party the next evening.

And, like everything else at Coney, this newbie is already imperiled. Staar isn't sure whether they'll be able to reopen Dreamland as development continues next summer, so lace up and show your support while you have the chance!
