New NYC Restaurant: Empanada Joe's

August 27, 2008 at 1:30 PM | by | Comments (3)

We usually don't get on board with chain restaurants, especially in New York, where nothing is a bigger food sin than eating at Pizza Hut instead of a local pizzeria or visiting Subway instead of a corner sandwich shop.

We're excited though, by Empanada Joe's, a new mini-chain setting up shop in Manhattan.

The first location opened last week in Morningside Heights, with two more apparently on the way in Chelsea and Midtown. While you can find some damn good empanadas here and there in Caribbean and Latin American neighborhoods, they're surprisingly few and far between in the city.

The offerings at Empanada Joes's go beyond your usual chicken and beef empanadas, with specials like rojo pulled pork, dolce sausage and peppers and Mediterranean caprese. They even have chocolate and banana or pina colada empanadas for dessert.

Are they as crisp and fresh as you'll get in Punto del Diablo? Not by a long shot. But at three bucks each, they're certainly good enough to make a regular appearance on our NYC snack menu.

I went here!

for dinner tonight. It was tasty but not overwhelming. 2 empanadas is about right for dinner. My only complaint was that my pina colada dessert empanada didn't have much filling in it. If you go examine the ends of your empanada for the "EJ" trademark for Empanada Joe's. My pina colada empanada had PC stamped at the other end as well. Mass marketing gone delicious?

Delicious

OMG talk about a treat.  I devoured 3 of these puppies.  The Rio Chicken and Rojo Pulled Pork are absolute standouts.  I love the fact that these empandas are toasted and flaky.  I really don't care much for the fried ones.

BTW the bacon egg and cheese one was so good I'm puttin this place on my breakfast on the go  short list.

Anyway , I highly recommend empanada joe's.  Love the store too it's like a food boutique rather than another dingy tacky fast food joint.

Good n cheap.

I got one of their meal packs. It ran me about 8 bucks with tax. The baked empanadas were rather delcious. Be aware though that there is not a lot of Latin style empanadas here. I mean the tomato, basil, mozzarella and sausage and peppers empanadas tasted really good and was a nice change of pace but not what I normally expect from a Latin style place. Bottom this is a nice little oasis in the TS area were tasty food can be had for a very fair price. I recommend it.
