Hudson Valley Escape: Rhinebeck

August 26, 2008 at 2:00 PM | by BS | 4 Comments

Two hours north of New York City, Rhinebeck is best-known as a retreat for holistic healing types, but it's also a chilled-out getaway with a variety of options, whether or not you're up on your yoga chants.

Rhinebeck is home to the Omega Institute, a hippie wellness center where you can take yoga and reiki classes, or, if that's way too mainstream for you, sign up for "ecstatic chant" or "touching divinity."

On the way-less-relaxed side of the spectrum, there's the Old Rhinebeck Aerodome, a museum of antique aviation that offers rides on a 1929 open-cockpit biplane.

No matter how you're getting your kicks in Rhinebeck, here's our guide to the rest of town:

Where to Stay: There's no shortage of B&B's in and around Rhinebeck. If you're going for quaint--and hopefully you are, or you shouldn't be looking this way--check out the Olde Rhinbeck Inn, a restored 1745 farmhouse with spacious modern rooms.

Where to Eat: No problem here either. Rhinebeck gets plenty of weekenders and New York country house types, so it has all your city standards, from sushi (Osaka), to French (Le Petit Bisto) and Italian (Gigi Trattoria).

When to Go: September 6-7, so you can pig out at the Hudson Valley Wine & Food Festival. But really any time in the fall will be nice on the foliage front.

Getting There: The Rhinecliff-Kingston Amtrak station, set within the town of Rhinebeck, is a one hour and forty minute trip from Penn Station.

    Awesome Place

The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is definitely a must-see in the area.  It's almost scary to watch the old planes take off and land on a strip of grass with only a single propeller to keep them going.

The Double O Grill, across from the fairgrounds, is also a great place to grab a bite to eat.

    The train ride.

I love your entry about Rhinebeck!  I have lived here for over 10 years and it really is a wonderful and special place.  I wanted to comment on your posting that the Amtrak from New York City is only 1 hour and 40 minutes (as opposed to 2h 40m).  All the closer!

    other good venues

Some other good venues in Rhinebeck include The Terrapin Restaurant, Upstate Films for vintage cinema, and the Rhinecliff Hotel, very close to Rhinebeck. Myriam Bouchard www.VisitTheHudsonValley.com
